Workshop
Introduction to Transformative Community Organising
Interactive session on the basics of transformative community organising. You'll learn what it takes to sustain and build power collectively.
Act Build Change | 24 Apr 2025 | Online

This interactive workshop, hosted by Ariel, is for new, curious and established organisers. Perhaps this is the first time something in your community has made you angry and hopeful enough to take action. Or perhaps you have been organising for a long time and want to get back to the fundamentals.
Community Organising is a power building methodology. Not all organising is working to transform the system for the dignity of all people. In fact some of the most effective organising works to keep the system as it is, or significantly makes it worse for those most marginalised in our society.
Our training is here to support people who want to change the system. To win change so that all of us have freedom and dignity over our lives and are in relationship with the natural world. No matter how much you have in your pockets, your race, your access needs, your gender or who you choose to love or worship.
In this course you will:
- Learn what community organising is.
- Learn the role of an organiser.
- Learn what power means in organising.
- Learn how to build teams.
Ariel Lew Ai Le Whitson has over a decade of experience as a community organiser focused on social justice issues, primarily with environmental and land justice. Before joining Act Build Change, she was the Senior Director of Community Organising and Education at TreePeople, a leading Los Angeles-based NGO, where she led a team of 40 organisers and educators supporting communities impacted by climate change and environmental injustice. Prior to TreePeople, she ran major advocacy campaigns at Ten Strands, securing significant legislative and funding victories for climate literacy. Ariel is passionate about healing the violent separation of land and people through organising.
