Freelance Community Organiser at Black Lives Matter UK

Build community power in London with BLM.

This role is 2 days/14 hours a week from 5th January - 30th June, with the possibility of extension.

As a Community Organiser, you will be responsible for building and sustaining a base of community members, with a focus on achieving change that is both immediate and transformative. Your work will be guided by three core strands:

  1. Building Collective Power & Shifting Structures
  2. Winning Material Improvements & Campaign Strategy
  3. Facilitating Political Education & Development

Who you are:

  • Deeply aligned with our mission and have a practical understanding of transformative, grassroots organising principles.
  • A connector and relationship-builder with proven experience engaging and organising within your community (this could be a geographic community, a faith group, a tenant’s association, a student network, etc.). Formal job title is not as important as demonstrated initiative and impact.
  • A strategic thinker who can help turn community anger and hope into a clear plan of action.
  • Ability to deliver a strategic and escalating organising plan in a fast moving and politically complex environment
  • Excellent planning skills to ensure projects are designed delivered to a high standard
  • A developer of people who gets joy from seeing others step into their power and lead.
  • A self-starter, highly resilient and adaptable, able to work independently and manage your time effectively across two days per week.
  • Willingness to occasionally work unsociable hours (always repaid with TOIL)
  • Based in or deeply familiar with the context of Black communities in England, particularly in or around London.
